Ghost Rider #2
Pencil pages from Ghost Rider #2. One of the things I enjoyed as a up and coming artist was seeing penciled pages from my favorite artists. Sometimes to see how they achieved something other times to see the changes or the faithfulness of the inker. Any ways enjoy.

My First Post
The anatomy of a FEMALE Ghost Rider
orHow I learned to to like the fact that yes, she has breasts/boobs
Designing a new character or a redesign of a character is always tough. First you need to make them there own and distinct look. Plus you have to give them touches of character that they are replacing. Every Spider-man costume has had common elements along with the various Spider-girl/woman/guy/clone. Hell try drawing Superman with out the “S” Shield or Batman without the bat and you’ll get lynched.
So I got the opportunity to re-imagine the Ghost Rider as a female easier said than done. First problem skeletons are skeletons once all the flesh is stripped off but then again this is a comic certain conventions are built into the system I drew upon previous versions of the character Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch. I’ll be using other artist drawings to illustrate my point and this is no means looking down upon them. Each of these artist are exceptional draftsman are fantastic artists They used the same conventions I am when drawing a character made out of bones and whose head is on fire.

Johnny Blaze the 70’s Ghost Rider sporting six pack abs but finely toned leg muscles and a thick neck.

True we shouldn’t see any of this musculature but it’s a comic and while GHOST RIDER isn’t a superhero he is the star and the main character so he has to look the part otherwise he would look funny.

Danny Ketch the next GHOST RIDER also sporting the Ripped leg muscles and while we can’t see the abs who needs to see them with leg muscles so taunt. But now check out those arms damn he lifts. AGAIN just pointing out there are certain rules we have to break to design GHOST RIDER to make him or in out case HER to look.

So that was a long way to say yep, she has breasts.
So now on to the designing of the Female GHOST RIDER. Or ALE as that is her name or Alejandra
OK, flaming Skull and tight leather those are musts but how about her overall look is it a jump suit or a biker look. Johnny had the jumpsuit, and my feeling is each of the Ghosts need they distinct look so Danny gets the biker look all to himself. Ale needs to combine a few elements from both. Accoutrements Johnny didn’t have anything except hellfire erupting from his hands. Danny had the flaming chains and the stare. Our girl has her Sythe-sword made of hellfire and this will give her a more of a “Death” and armored arm and shielded gloves for a more gladiatorial feel. Oh and Locust which common was pretty cool.
Those were my guide lines. My writer wanted her to have a Warrior feel to the design. So I began sketching.

My First concept
Rough bits, I liked the hair peaking through the flames the shoulder protection on her sword hand like a gladiator. The skull stylized a decent first attempt but I’ll expand on that in another drawing.

My Second attempt…FORGET it this went pear shaped from the beginning it look cheesy sci-fi from the 80’s

The Third was on to something but it was still off. Part of the problem is the hellbike in my opinion is also part of the character and really does influence the design. That is what was missing whats her bike gonna be. I mulled it over talked with creative team. A Ducati nice and sleek, speedy and a nice silhouette.

The forth attempt sometimes the smallest of drawing point the way. It was simple and yet effective. I’ll add on the Armor and do a final.

The Final model sheet. This was passed to everyone to show her human face the bike and her final look.
There you go the thought process into creating a female Ghost Rider.

It’s Friday. That means it’s time for “Looking Under the Line Art”! Since issue #0.1 of the new Ghost Rider series I’m working on came out this week, we’re going to take a look at some art from an upcoming issue. It’s written by Rob Williams, with awesome pencils by Matthew Clark ( @EmCeeArtist ), and killer inks by Sean Parsons. Enjoy!
